Ad Gerritsen (1940-2015)

Ad Gerritsen (1940-2015)

Painter, Graphic artist

Gerritsen (Arnhem 1940)

Painter, graphic artist, sculptor.

Education: Ad Gerritsen went to the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem but did not complete his education there.

He lives and works in Arnhem.

A major theme in Ad Gerritsen's work is the contextuality of truth; in his work he investigates whether an objective reality exists. There is often an uncomfortable situation hidden behind the bright colors and clear visual language that Gerritsen often works with. People are central to his paintings, but Gerritsen does not make portraits; he wants to use this to comment on the different ways in which we deal with personal images in our current visual culture. Gerritsen is also a teacher at the mixed media department of the Academy of Art and Industry in Enschede.

Exhibitions and prizes:

In 2000 Ad Gerritsen won the Gelderland Graphics Prize and in 2011 the Jeanne Oosting Prize. His work has been exhibited throughout the country and several museums and companies have his work in their collection.
