Albert Wessels (1938-2010)

ALBERT WESSELS (Rijssen 1938 - 2010) painter, illustrator

Wessels was a painter who specialized in nature scenes. He was nationally renowned for his work for the John Bunyan Foundation, among other things. But he was also a welcome guest in Israel.

Albert Wessels was a self-taught artist who later took lessons from the Almelo artist Janny Brugman-de Vries. After graduating from school he did not directly enter the art world, but to earn a living he started as a warehouse salesman at the then Rijssen textile company Heka.

In the 1960s he was able to turn his hobby into a job because his employer gave him the opportunity to work part-time.

Wessels initially worked a lot on commission. He made large harbor scenes for a buyer from Rotterdam. This brought him into contact with a German art dealer who was very interested in his nature scenes. From then on, the blossoming of his painting career began.

Wessels made recognizable art. He was an admirer of the artists of the Hague School. Impressionists such as Mauve, Mesdag and the Maris brothers particularly appealed to him, although he was not always 100 percent in line with them. “Someone advised to just call my style the Rijssen School”, he used to put into perspective.

Wessels' paintings with Old Testament scenes for the John Bunyan Foundation earned him an exhibition in Jerusalem. He could count the then mayor and later Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert among his personal circle of friends.

Wessels made nature paintings with the love of his heart, because in them he could portray God's creation. When non-religious people told him that his canvases touched a chord with them, it pleased him. "That is beautiful and special, that you can show people that there is a dimension more than just the horizontal."
