André van SCHUYLENBERGH (1952)
Graduated in 1973 from Sint-Lucas Hogeschool Gent, in the studio of Dan Van Severen, André Van Schuylenbergh was noted in the 1980s as the 'enfant terrible' of painting at the time. He is soon taken under the wing of the internationally renowned Swiss “Galleria Sacchetti”, which may have come at the cost of local recognition within the Belgian art world.
André Van Schuylenbergh is not only a pur sang artist, but also a passionate snooper, design freak and collector. His mind-blowing collection of ceramics by Picasso, Somville, Sottsass, the Vandeweghe brothers, Lampecco, Portanier and many others was very exceptionally shown in the exhibition section 'Les Collections d'André', at his retrospective at the provincial museum "Caermersklooster" in 2013.
Van Schuylenbergh became known for his specific lines in the design of the female silhouette, the result of a far-reaching stylization of an unapproachable female head. A predilection for ethnic art and grand masters such as Picasso, Miró, Salomé, Hockney, Warhol and Basquiat influenced him resolutely in the evolution of his oeuvre. Not only his own wife becomes his artistic muse, but an adoration for the exotic woman in general fuels his creations. The various periods in Van Schuylenbergh's oeuvre are almost literally exposed, but the variety of media with which he satisfies his artistic passion is also evident in the paintings, sculptures, ceramics, assemblages and objets trouvés.
