Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971)

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971)

Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect who was also involved in interior design. His buildings include the SAS Hotel in Copenhagen and St. Catherine's College in Oxford. His well-known furniture designs are De Zwaan, De Mier and Het ei . He also made industrial designs for utensils and lamps, among other things. Jacobsen started out as a stonemason and studied architecture in Copenhagen, after which he joined Paul Holsoe. During his student days he was inspired by Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter GRopius. After his time at Holsoe, he started his own agency in Hellerup. Later Jacobsen lectured at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. Jacobsen is seen as a pioneer of modernism in Denmark. He was also a supporter of functionalism: the function of the design always comes first and the form arises from that. His designs are therefore described as typical Scandinavian: elegant, timeless and honest.
