Bakari Manzi (1968-2002)

Sculptor

Bakari MANZI (Tengenenge 1968 – ?? 2002)

One of the seven children of the sculptor couple Josiah and Jenet Manzi. As is customary in this well-known artists' village, he learned the principles of sculpting from his parents and other artists. In addition to sculptures, he also made paintings. Work by members of the Manzi family was shown in Wageningen in 1989 at the exhibition Beelden op de Berg 5, 'Sculptors of Zimbabwe'. In 1995 he led a sculpture workshop with Bernard Matemera at the Artis zoo in Amsterdam. He made this statue in 1997 on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Zimbabwe.
