Born in Leerdam, Bernard Heesen, son of Willem Heesen, came into contact with glass art at a young age. While studying architecture in Delft, he worked in his father's glass workshop. In the eighties he switched permanently to glass. Heesen mainly worked as a glass blower for other artists and designers. In 1995 he took over his father's company. Heesen's well-known series are the Encyclopaedic Wroughts and the carillon bells in Leidsche Rijn. He is inspired by ancient arts and techniques, such as engravings from the Baroque period, which he translates into glass objects. With this he goes in search of the technical possibilities of glass and reflects on the image and function of glass.
