Bert Nienhuis (1873-1960)

Bert NIENHUIS (Groningen 1873 - Blaricum 1960)

After his education at the Groningen Drawing Academy, Nienhuis started further education in 1895 at the State School of Applied Arts and that same year started working at the De Distel pottery bakery. This was only for a short time, because in 1896 he founded the De Lotus tile bakery. When De Lotus merged into De Distel in 1901, Nienhuis became manager. At De Distel he produced high-quality products with many ornamental decorations and a unique translucent white glaze. In the years that followed, Nienhuis again started producing ceramics itself. He learned to use the turntable and made all his products by hand. He had previously had no experience with this, since only cast ceramics are produced at De Distel. Along with this technical change, the character of its products also changes. The shapes and decorations become freer. Nienhuis has long admired Chinese and Japanese ceramics. He was inspired by this, but continued to design his own shapes. In 1948 Nienhuis started with a new concept: ceramic sculptures. He produced the parts separately in molds and later assembled the sculpture. The total production of Nienhuis, compared to that of Chris Lanooij, is not very large. This can be explained by the fact that Nienhuis was not dependent on its own production. His works therefore received a lot of attention. The high quality of his products was also noticed at the time, which allowed him to often exhibit his work.
