Chris Lebeau, born in Amsterdam in 1878, was an artist and important representative of Dutch Art Nouveau and Art Deco. He worked from the same philosophy as William Morris and wanted to bring back the beauty and quality in design and craft. He was famous for his designs for tablecloths, posters, murals and stamps, for example. He made designs for various factories in the textile, glass and pottery industry and was involved in painting, graphics and batik techniques.
Despite the state of poverty in which his family often found himself, he successfully completed the Amsterdamse Kunst Nijverheid Drawing School Quellinus and then the Rijksschool Kunstnijverheid. During his drawing lessons at the Vâhana school he got to know JLM Lauweriks and KPC de Bazel. In addition to his work as an artist and designer, he also taught for a while as a teacher at an evening vocational school and the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem. In 1904 Lebeau became co-founder of the Dutch Association for Crafts and Industry (VANK). Lebeau's life ended in 1945 during the German occupation, after he had been transferred the previous year to the concentration camp in Dachau for aid to Dutch Jews.
