Chris van der HOEF (Amsterdam, 1875 - The Hague, 1933)
Van der Hoef was an apprentice sculptor from 1888 at the Atelier Van den Bossche en Crevels in Amsterdam. In 1898 he started working at the Amstelhoek Earthenware Factory, where he became a designer and manufacturer of decorative objects and utensils. From 1903 to 1910 he was associated with De Woning Amsterdam, South Holland Gouda, Haga Purmerend and Amphora Oegstgeest. From 1910, Van der Hoef stopped making pottery and started working almost exclusively on sculpting and creating tokens. He lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1904, Gouda until 1905, in Amsterdam from 1905 to 1925 (in the former studio of Lambertus Zijl) and in The Hague from 1925 until his death in 1933.
Van der Hoef was a representative of the Dutch New Art, a movement that is called Jugendstil in Germany. On the one hand, Jugendstil has the curvilinear or decorative Art Nouveau (called "salad oil style" in the Netherlands with a wink), which chose nature as inspiration, with flowing, undulating lines of plant and animal motifs. In addition, melancholic female figures were the starting point. On the other hand, geometric Art Nouveau focused more on clean and geometric lines and mathematical motifs. Motifs from nature return here as abstractions. Van der Hoef worked in both styles.
