Dirk van Driest (1889-1989)

Dirk van Driest (1889-1989)

Dirk van DRIEST (Palembang 1889 - Taos (New Mexico) 1989)

Also signed with Dick van Driest (presumably easier to pronounce abroad)

Dirk van Driest, signed in Palembang on the Indonesian island of Sumatra (Netherlands Indies).
In 1948 he settled in Morocco where he worked for eight years and often exhibited his work in France. Village and harbor scenes and portraits predominate. In 1956 he emigrated to the United States, via New Orleans. After a long journey across the country he chose Taos, New Mexico, to settle and spend the rest of his life there. The Indians of New Mexico became a prominent subject in his work from then on and he painted a series of portraits of native people, focusing on expressing their character rather than their physical likeness. Van Driest was granted American citizenship in 1981 and died in 1989 at the age of 100.
