Frank VAN DEN BROECK (Eindhoven, 1950)
Eindhoven Netherlands 1950, lives and works in Amsterdam.
'An unruly sorceress who cannot be pushed aside' is what Samuel Beckett calls the 'involuntary memory' in Proust. "She herself chooses the time and place for the performance of her miracles." This fragment of text could be a motto for the work of Frank Van den Broeck. Everything that is part of his memory, as casually recorded and stored in memory, can at some point emerge and present itself as the theme for one of his drawings or paintings. Van den Broeck's artistic memory is a fluid reservoir of potential motives, which testifies to his interest in literature, music and the visual arts, but also in everyday life. Van den Broeck is originally a draftsman. Until 1983 he worked in pencil, charcoal or Siberian chalk. In that year color came into the work in the form of pastels. Oil paintings and watercolors were created later in the eighties, but the motifs basically remain the same. The paintings are more elaborate and much more hermetic than the drawings, which are literally more open. The more or less figurative elements emerge in beautifully wavy and flowing patterns of lines. All lines, all actions of the hand remain visible and traceable.
