Guido Lippens (1939) Dutch artist
After a period of expressionistic, figurative work in the sixties, Guido Lippens started to practice painting that was sometimes called fundamental painting. This could be an ever-repeated act of emptying a paintbrush on wrapping paper, drawing a white surface by hand according to a strict grid, or painting a surface with successively one, two and three layers of white, so that a subtle difference was detectable in color intensity. At the end of this period, in 1982, Lippens took part in the Documenta in Kassel.
The endless exercises in concentration without wanting to create a recognizable image later resulted in small paintings in which motifs were recognizable, for example the contours of a circular saw blade, but in which no story could be read. Precision and concentration were still the keywords around which everything revolved. Guido Lippens has always expanded this modest visual language with new motifs. There is also more and more variation in technology. In addition to drawing and painting, scroll saw became an important element. He has even used scorch marks from a wood stove.
Guido Lippens is not afraid that his work will be seen as decorative. Although it is not only decorative, repetition and decoration are the process that leads to his art. This characteristic earned him a place in the exhibition The power of repetition, in Museum de Wieger and Museum Jan Cunen in Oss in 1996.
