Herman MISSET (Amsterdam 1875 - Amsterdam 1958)
After training at the Drawing School for Arts and Crafts in the Jacob van Campenstraat, Misset worked as a house painter and wallpaper hanger-decorator from the age of fifteen. As an additional income, he drew and painted numerous cityscapes in watercolours, especially those that were under threat. But he also recorded details, such as uncommon facade types and facade stones. He developed his own, easily recognisable drawing style. Partly due to the absence of people and vehicles, his drawings have a tranquil character. Misset received commissions from the Royal Antiquities Society, the Municipal Archives and from various private collectors such as DC Meijer and J. van Eck. His most productive period was in the years 1899-1912. The archiveThe ?Kist Misset? in the Municipal Archives contains over 1000 sketches, which he considered his working material. This material mainly consists of architectural details, such as facades, mouldings, special decorations, doors, windows and consoles. He used this as the basis for his detailed watercolours.
