(Holmegaard 1825)
After its foundation in 1825, Holmegaard exclusively produced green beer bottles. Over time, it was decided to expand production and so the company also produced traditional European glassware from 1835. Orla Juul Nielsen was appointed as the company's first permanent employee and, in collaboration with Royal Copenhagen, designed glasses for various dinnerware. The emphasis was on aesthetics and simple designs. Jacob Bang entered the company in 1924 and was appointed artistic director in 1928. His focus was on rational designs that were intended to be industrially manufactured. Nevertheless, he ensures that the designs show a slight emotion. Bang was in favor of democratic design, where products should be available and affordable for everyone. Yet he also produced exclusive objects with Art Deco decorations. In 1942 Per Lutken succeeded him as director. According to him, products had to be used in everyday life and therefore had a functionalistic character. Holmegaard combines the traditional simplicity of Danish design with new experimental forms.
