Jan Ernens (1919)

Jan Ernens (1919)

Johannes (Jan) Ernens was born on August 22, 1919 in Medemblik. In the 1930s, 'Jan' Ernens visited the predecessor of the current Artibus Academy in Utrecht, where he was taught by the painter Henk Bellaard and the famous etcher Willem van Leusden. He rediscovered the etching techniques of Hercules Seeghers. Since those years he has developed into a versatile painter through all sides of métier, but is now only approachable for one facet of painting: The Portrait. This far-reaching step in a painter's development, capturing the human being in his facial expressions, gives him the satisfaction he has been looking for for many years. After all, what could be more fascinating than capturing fellow human beings in oil paint, trying to penetrate the person of the portrayed person? Jan Ernens proves to be excellent in this, see the numerous assignments that reach him, assignments for which he often lacks the time and which he regrets not being able to carry out. In addition, we still see his old love for the landscape, Dutch as it can be, although no longer decisive for his oeuvre.
