Jan Harm Oostendorp started drawing when he was six years old. As a mate on the merchant navy, he traveled the wide world. He lived in the Dutch East Indies (Batavia, Tegal, Malang and Surabaya) and Australia, on Ameland, in Haren and in Norg. In Haren he lived at the lake Sassenheim. Much to his regret, he had to leave that place when the new Rijksweg was built. In Norg he bought a dilapidated farm from 1717 for the price of 1 guilder, under the condition that the new owner would bear the costs of restoration himself. He succeeded by using stones from a farm dating from 1700 in Gasselte that was demolished. Oostendorp then conceived the plan to turn Norg into an artists' village, in the vein of Laren and Bergen. According to Oostendorp, similar farms such as the one he inhabited could serve excellently as an exhibition space and as a workshop where artists could show their working methods to tourists. Oostendorp was taught by J Mulder, HF Boot and LWR Wenckebach, among others. Besides painting, watercolor painting and drawing (a lot in pastel), he was also actively involved in wall painting. His great preference is for the landscape with beautiful skies and water features. Horses and bird depictions are also known. When his eyesight deteriorated sharply later in life and painting became increasingly difficult, Oostendorp started buying back his work from the owners, and subsequently exhibiting it in his farm.
