Jan SLUIJTERS (Den Bosch 1881 - Amsterdam 1957)
Jan Sluijters was a Dutch painter, draftsman and illustrator known for his expressionistic style. Sluijters grew up in Den Bosch as the son of a draftsman and painter and also received his early education there, at the Royal School for Useful and Visual Arts. He also studied in Amsterdam, where he trained, among other things, to become an art teacher. In 1904 he won the Prix de Rome and with this grant he was able to make a study trip to Rome, Venice, Madrid and Paris. In the latter place he was influenced by the work of neo-impressionists such as Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Kees van Dongen. During his career, Sluijters would experiment a lot with avant-garde art movements such as Cubism and Fauvism and he is seen as an artist who was modern for his time. He painted much of Parisian street life, but also portraits, especially of women, which he believed were more beautiful to look at. In his later life he started to paint more domestic scenes. Sluijters was a source of inspiration for Piet Mondrian and the Cobra movement, among others.
