JACKET (Hillegom 1945 - Antwerp 2002)
JAS is a pseudonym for Johannes Adrianus Smit
Painter, graphic artist, sculptor, installation artist.
Education: JAS was self-taught.
JAS' abstract expressionist work is inspired, among other things, by the landscape of the southern part of Sweden, which turns yellow in spring, and by German expressionism. In 1983 JAS moved to Belgium and in 1986 he founded the artists' group Sybarit together with Henk Klinkhamer and Robert van Vliet. Because of his dislike for tube paint, JAS has developed his own soft paint, which is clearly visible in his work. He also made a 'JAS chalk' - also known as Clowny - which was also used by Willem de Kooning (with whom JAS worked in the studio for some time) and Karel Appel.
Exhibitions and prizes:
JAS's work has been exhibited in the United States, France, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands, among others.
