Karin Bos (1966)

Karin Bos (1966)

Karin BOS (Rijswijk (South Holland, 1966-05-09) is a master of suggestion. Her paintings show fairytale landscapes in which children wander, who at first sight are occupied with innocent things. There is camping, dancing or something mysterious. loaded and full of 'suspense' The artist seems to be asking us what we are really seeing.

The exhibition “Shifting Views” shows how the artist steps out of her own living and working environment in order to arrive at new insights. She has done several work projects in guest studios, which have given her a new perspective on her own familiar environment. A nice side effect is that the public could follow her work process. She has worked in Amsterdam, the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, the village of Zvartava in Latvia and Spain. In Enkhuizen Bos travels back in time on the basis of the theme of water and in Latvia Bos seeks seclusion. The only contact with the rest of the world is in the form of the local newspaper. The front page photos are the inspiration for the work “Headlines Zvartava/Amsterdam”, where she applies a technique that is new to her by painting with glaze on ceramics.

The working periods in Spain resulted in paintings and watercolors of ruins, dilapidated caravans and slums in an unruly and volcanic landscape. In these colorful and beautiful landscapes we see majorettes and girls in processional dresses again. In addition, Bos is making the video film “Shifting Views” together with the sculptor Erik Wuthrich. Karin Bos graduated in 1989 from the Amsterdam School of the Arts in Amsterdam, where she also lives and works. Her work is in various museum and corporate collections, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
