Kees FRENCH
Painter, sculptor, graphic artist, draftsman
Born in 1924 in Oud-Beijerland as Cornelis Franse, died in 1982 in Rotterdam.
Education: Frans studied from 1944 to 1949 at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. Subsequently worked in Rotterdam and Paris, among others.
The well-known Rotterdam artist Kees Franse often made abstract-figurative city views, figure representations and flower and fruit still lifes. An often recurring motif is the apple. He also experimented with wood sculptures. In 1951 he co-founded the artists' group Argus, with whom he exhibited a number of times. In 1954 he received the Royal Grant for Painting. From 1969 until his death he taught at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts.
Exhibitions and prizes:
In 1959, the French represented the Netherlands at the Paris Biennale. In 1987 a retrospective of his work was held in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum. Work by Frans can be seen in the public space of Rotterdam and Gorinchem, among other places, and hangs in various museums.
