Martin van Waning (1889-1972)

Painter, Sculptor

Martin van WaningGijsbertus Martinus Wilhelmus Franciscus (Martin) van Waning (The Hague, September 4, 1889 - Dokkum, July 7, 1972) was a Dutch painter.Life and workGrave monument with self-portrait of Martin van WaningVan Waning was an engineer and worked in technology, but decided to paint. He took lessons with artists such as Charles Dankmeijer and Willem de Zwart and later moved to the art center in Wiesbaden. In Germany he met the Russian Grand Duke Orlov and became his private secretary. Together with Orlov he traveled through France, Italy, Spain and North Africa. In 1917 Van Waning settled in the Netherlands again and lived first in Oostvoorne and later in the Veluwe. From 1934 he lived on the Wadden Island of Schiermonnikoog, where he established his studio in the former nautical school. During the Second World War, the studio was bombed and a large part of his work was destroyed. The influence of the Hague School is noticeable in Van Waning's paintings. He painted waterscapes and landscapes, among other things. In addition to painting, Van Waning was active as a sculptor, graphic artist and medalist.Source: Wikipedia
