Max ERNST (Brühl 1891 - Paris 1976)
Max Ernst was a Swiss painter and sculptor. He studied art history for some time at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. He received painting lessons from his father and was also self-taught. Ernst was a surrealist artist who interacted with many other artists, including Paul Klee, Marchel Duchamp and Marc Chagall. With Hans Arp, among others, he formed the Cologne Dadagroepering Zentrale W/3 after the First World War. Back in Paris, he worked with Joan Mirò on the sets of Serge Diaghilev's famous Ballets Russes. Ernst played an important role in the emergence of surrealism in the artist community of Montparnasse. From 1934 he also started making sculptures. He used various techniques such as collage, grattage, dripping, frottage and assemblage.
