Nicolaas WIJNBERG (Amsterdam 1918 - Laren 2006)
Painter, graphic artist, sculptor.
Education: From 1933 to 1935 Wijnberg followed a course in chromolithography at the Amsterdam Graphic School and from 1935 to 1942 he attended an evening course in drawing at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He always emphasized his self-taught status as a painter. Wijnberg has lived and worked in Amsterdam and Laren.
Wijnberg trained as a lithographer, but was involved in several areas. From 1940 to 1942 he taught color theory and typography at the Nieuwe Kunstschool in Amsterdam. Since 1943 he has illustrated collections of poetry and novels. In 1945, together with Hans Snoek and Hans van Norden, he founded the Scapino Ballet, the first youth ballet group in the world. In 1947 Wijnberg was co-founder of the painters' association De Realisten, a group that focused on figurative art and opposed the abstract art of Cobra and Vrije Beelden. Wijnberg mainly made figure representations and portraits, still lifes, landscapes and cityscapes. From 1958 he was a visual arts editor for the literary magazine Tirade and from 1965 to 1970 he had his own art dealership. He was professor of scenography at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
Exhibitions and prizes:
Wijnberg's work has been exhibited at home and abroad. A large part of his graphic work can be found in the Rijksprentenkabinet. In 1967 Wijnberg won the HN Werkman Prize for his graphic work. In 2000 he won the oeuvre prize of the Fund for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture.
