Onno de Graaf (1956)

Onno de Graaf (1956)

ONNO THE COUNT

Painter, Graphic artist

Born in Alblasserdam in 1956.

Onno de Graaf creates images from the tangible environment in which he chooses to live. He makes simple but ingenious stories about animals and machines, about water and fire and about air and earth.

Onno De Graaf creates his own world in which everything is possible: a cat takes off and transforms into a helicopter and a fish changes into a submarine or a can of sardines. The animals play the role that they are assigned by the artist without will. Striking in the work of Onno de Graaf is the spontaneous character. He uses a visual language that is recognizable and makes things that amuse him personally while improvising.

Onno de Graaf only uses one technique: the monoprint. His images are created layer by layer on glass, they grow like trees, they carefully seek their way in order to develop in the most optimal way. With each print, the image is re-examined and analyzed, with certain parts having to disappear to make way for new ideas. The Japanese paper on which Onno de Graaf prints his works can sometimes barely bear the burden of the thick layers of paint. Other times a drawing can consist of a few powerful lines with just a single key of color.

In a lively style, Onno de Graaf depicts a world in which tranquility and activity are in balance. You could call it primitive, on the edge of the magical.

Onno de Graaf was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam and lives and works in Alblasserdam. .
