Otto Lais (1897-1988)

Otto Lais (1897 - 1988) was born on October 19, 1897 in a small village, Wilferdingen, near Karlsruhe in Germany. Until the 2nd World War he was an art teacher at a primary school, after this war he worked as a rector at a secondary school. In addition to Berlin and Dresden, the Karlsruhe School with its most important representatives of the realistic art of the 1920s, which has become so topical in recent years, also plays a special role: in addition to Otto Lais, Georg Scholz (b. 1800), Karl Hubbuch (b. 1891) and Wilhelm Schnarrenberger (born 1892).

Between 1921 and 1933 Otto Lais made about 100 etchings, after which his work was banned by the Kunstkammer (1936). After that time he never made an etching again. After the 2nd World War he painted watercolors or was involved in making thick techniques.

In Lais's life dozens of exhibitions of his works have been held, among others in Karlsruhe, Berlin, Paris, Brussels. Lais was not just a painter, by Dr. Phil. Ludwin Langenfeld has written a book in which some 85 etchings by Lais are discussed.
