Paul CITROEN (Berlin 1896 - Wassenaar 1983)

Paul Citroen grew up in Berlin where he came into contact with Art and Literature at a young age. Paul Citroen studied at the Kunsthochschule in Berlin. As co-founder of an art bookshop in Berlin, he came into contact with many innovative artists, including members of the DaDa movement. Influenced by this environment, Paul Citroen started drawing again and was admitted to the famous Bauhaus school in Weimar, where he was taught by greats from art history such as Paul Klee and Kandinsky.
In 1927, Paul Citroen settles in the Netherlands, Amsterdam, where he initially focuses mainly on photography. In 1933 he co-founded the ?New School of Art? which, however, had to close in 1937. After this, Paul Citroen becomes a teacher at the Art Academy in The Hague until 1960 (with the exception of the war years).
As a teacher at the Hague Art Academy, he is one of the driving forces behind the movement that is now the ?New Hague School? is called. Paul Citroen was best known for his many portraits.
Paul Citroen's work is in many museum, corporate and private collections, including the National Collection. In 1950 and 1956 he received the Jacob Maris Prize.
