Peter Doig (Edinburgh, 1959) is a Scottish painter known for his timeless, exotic landscape paintings.
Many of Doig's images are landscapes, some of which refer to scenes in the snow from his childhood in Canada.
His work is often based on photographs, but are not painted photo-realistically. Doig rather creates magical-realistic scenes. The composition of his landscapes is often horizontal, creating an atmosphere of vastness and tranquility. In his paintings he combines different colors, which makes them playful.
Doig's best-known work is his series of paintings of Le Corbusier's modernist apartment building, l'Unite d'Habitation in Briety-en-Foret, France. The modern urban structures are partly hidden by the forest that surrounds the building.
Between 1979 and 1980, Doig studied at the Wimbledon School of Art, and from 1980 to 1983 at St Martin's School of Art, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree. Doig received his master's degree in 1990 from the Chelsea College of Art and Design. Between 1995 and 2000, Doig served on the Tate's Board of Directors. Since 2002 he lives and works in Trinidad. Since 2005 he is Professor of Painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Peter Doig is one of the highest paid living painters. In February 2007, his 'Wide White Canoe' painting was auctioned at Sotheby's in London for £5.7 million, a record at the time for a painting by a living artist.
