PETER VAN DEN AKKER

Painter, Graphic Artist, Ceramic

Born in Amsterdam in 1949

Peter van den Akker is a committed artist. He is concerned about society; how people interact with each other and with nature. His work is a reflection of this struggle with the world. It is about the contradictions he encounters as rational-emotional, nature-culture, power-impotence and love-hate.

The contradictions are reflected in the work by different starting points. On the one hand, there are clear figurations, such as figures, heads, faces and natural forms such as leaves and trees. On the other hand, there is an abstract fact. Ferocious paint, pencil and pinstripes form an abstract composition that can be interpreted as the artist's emotional impact on the world around him. He uses different techniques. He alternates oil and acrylic paintings with drawings, gouaches and serigraphs.

Nowadays, Peter van den Akker's work is mainly about his vision of the future of the world. Today's society is undergoing rapid development and new communication options are emerging. At the same time, an integration of different cultures takes place and under the influence of this a shift of norms and values takes place. In his attempt to get a grip on this changing society, Peter van den Akker often draws and paints different shapes over and over each other. This gives the work a layering with multiple levels of meaning. The artist makes connections, but perhaps even more importantly, the viewer is challenged to interpret the work. The artist gives the viewer handles for this, also gives the work a title, but these are only pointers that lead the viewer in a direction, but leave room for their own imagination.

Peter van den Akker was educated at the Art Academy in Utrecht.
