Born in Amsterdam in 1957.
Themes in his work are architecture, cities and the people in them. Industry, buildings, ports. With their tunnels, stairs and vistas. But also city life. Cities have an unmistakable connection with the doings of people.
Peter works both spatially and on a flat surface with different types of techniques. The work often has a strong monumental character. However, the basis is always the line drawing. Peter draws from observation and follows the contours of the subject. The resulting drawings stand alone, but are also good starting points for other works. Reliefs of weathered zinc, copper and aluminum. Sculptures and installations made of glass, plastic or wood. Ink-printed and hand-rubbed woodcuts.
Peter has exhibited at the London Transport Museum, the Bury Museum of Art (both in England) and Gallery Labirinth in Ljublijana (Slovenia) among others. He has also carried out assignments for the ING bank, the RABO bank and the van Mesdag clinic, among others. Peter regularly organizes workshops where artists from different countries meet and work and exhibit together. His work hangs in institutions, companies, museums and in people's homes, at home and abroad.
Peter Wortel was educated at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (1972-1974) and the Minerva Academy in Groningen (1980-1984) and worked in Haren. .
