Piet van der Hem (1885-1961)

Piet van der Hem (1885-1961)

Piet van der Hem (Wirdum, September 9, 1885 - The Hague, April 24, 1961) was a painter, draftsman and binding designer. Van der Hem was born in Friesland. He was a son of Dirk van der Hem, merchant, and Geertje Pieters Smids.

When he was orphaned at the age of twelve, Piet van der Hem was taken into the family of an aunt and uncle in Leeuwarden. After four years of attending the state high school in this city, he decided, stimulated by his art teacher J. Bubberman, to further develop his skills as an artist. In 1902 Van der Hem went to Amsterdam to study at the State School of Applied Arts. He also studied drawing at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.

From mid-1907 to 1908, a Royal Grant for Painting enabled him to live and study for a year at Montmartre in Paris. He made a large number of drawings and paintings of the street and nightlife in Paris, in which many similarities with the work of artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Theodor Steinlen are noticeable. Van der Hem was also fascinated by the charm of the Parisian nightlife. Then he returned to Amsterdam.

A reprint was made of ten small watercolors, which were painted by him in the summer of 1902 at the age of seventeen and sent as picture postcards to A. Fockema, who was staying abroad.

In 1914 he started working on De Nieuwe Amsterdammer with rather political drawings, which were not devoid of humour. He also made drawings for the magazine De Kroniek. In 1923 he started working as a political draftsman for De Haagsche Post. Van der Hem made dozens of drawings for the magazine Sprokkelingen of the Lindeteves Stokvis company, while he also designed advertising brochures, posters and book bindings for other companies. One reviewer wrote about him; "Here is a draftsman of admirable skill, agility, clarity and pointedness at work".
