De Porceleyne Fles pottery bakery was founded in 1653 by David Anthonisz. van der Piet. Since then, several acquisitions have taken place. In 1695 Johannes Knotter took over De Porceleyne Fles. He introduced the small jar as a mark. In 1876 Joost Thooft became the new owner. He wanted to bring back the tradition of hand-painted Blue Delft. Together with Abel Labouchère, he looked for new techniques that resembled the production of the harder English pottery. In 1919 De Porceleyne Fles received the designation “royal”.
The current owner of De Porceleyne Fles, Royal Delft, took over Royal Leerdam Crystal and Koninklijke Van Kempen & Begeer in 2008. This is how the Royal Delft Group was born. The Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft) is the only seventeenth-century pottery factory that is still operational. From 1876 all objects are provided with a mark: often the monogram JT (Joost Thooft), signatures of the designers, year letters and numbers.
Porcelyne Fles also has an experimental department where many artists are associated.
