WikipediaRichard Hamilton (24 February 1922 – 13 September 2011) was a British visual artist. He became known as the 'inventor' of Pop Art in Europe. Hamilton rose to fame in 1956 when he began creating works that would later become quintessential examples of Pop Art. In 1956 this British artist made the collage: Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?. It is considered to be one of the earliest examples of Pop art. Richard Hamilton collaborated with the painter and collagist Peter Blake, whose work became known for the collage he made for the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles. Hamilton himself designed the cover and poster for the Beatles for the album "the Beatles", better known as the white double or the white album. In 1966 Hamilton organized the first and so far only retrospective exhibition of Marcel Duchamp in England, which took place at the Tate Gallery. He had met Duchamp several years earlier when he visited the United States after his wife's death in 1962. Here he saw the retrospective of Duchamp at the Norton Simon Museum in 1963. Hamilton produced several works on the occasion of swinging London or swinging sixties, including work based on a photo of the arrest of his art dealer Robert Fraser and Mick Jagger, both in handcuffs on the back seat of a police car for drug possession.[1]Awards and Awards[edit]1960 - William and Noma Copley Foundation Award and John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize1970 - Talens Prize International1993 - Golden Lion for the British Pavilion at the Venice Bi_nnale_1997 - Arnold-Bode Prize at the documenta X in Kassel (Germany) 2000 - Order of the Brothers of Honor (United Kingdom) 2006 - Max-Beckmann Prize for Painting
