Rien van den Brink (1923-2013)

Rien van den Brink (1923-2013)

Rien van den BRINK Born on February 17, 1923 in Oosterhout Noord-Brabant, where he lives and grows up until he was 18. In 1945 he was first enrolled at the St. Joost art academy in Breda, where he met his wife Beatrijs. Teachers Gerrit de More_ (graphics and figure drawing) and Dio Rooves (painting). After a few years in Sint Joost, he left for a remote farm near Hilvarenbeek, where he continued to develop in seclusion. Thanks to Jan Naaykens, then editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Edel Brabant, where Rien van den Brink was associated as an illustrator, he gets his first exhibition in Tilburg. In 1949 he gets access to a small farm in Hoge Mierde, declared uninhabitable, where he, after the much-needed renovation work has been done, goes to live with his wife Beatrijs Vandepoel. In 1952 he moves to the Hees in Eersel. Until then, professionally he has mainly worked as an illustrator for a number of periodicals; he makes a lot of occasional graphics. During the entire reconstruction period, he makes numerous works in the monumental art sector, such as wall paintings, mosaics, stained glass. He also carries out needlework with his wife. Because all kinds of business worries and discussions with church-school boards become too much for him, he abruptly stops this kind of work, mainly because there is no time left for free work. He chooses in 1956, he then has five children, for art education. It gives him more space to focus on what he wants: the free art. 1961. Fifteen drawings with accompanying poems appear in the collection 'Dossier'. The original drawings are included in the Museum Ein Charod in Israel. In 1969 the house is expanded with an art room under the name De Hoge Hees. Every year his wife Beatrijs organizes eight exhibitions with spatial work in all variations. Because Rien van den Brink can make use of the wall space, he no longer has to move elsewhere to show his development.1976. When Rien is 52 years old, he makes 52 works under the title 'Three-Quarter', because he thinks that his life is three-quarters over. An etching from this series has been chosen by NRC Handelsblad as a print for its readers, in an edition of 150.1984. Publication of the book 'Signs of Life' by his son, prof.dr. Gabriel JM van den Brink.1998. Rien van den Brink turns 75. Small overview exhibition of his work, for which there is an exceptional amount of interest.2005. Publication of the book Seen de mens. Exhibition in the Hoge Hees.2008. Exhibition in Study Center Soeterbeek, conference center of the Radboud University Nijmegen.
