Robert Motherwell (1915-1991)
Robert Burns Motherwell (Aberdeen, Washington, January 24, 1915 - Provincetown, Massachusetts, July 16, 1991) was an American 20th century painter and one of the most famous representatives of Abstract Expressionism.Biography[edit]Robert Motherwell was born as the son of Robert Burns Motherwell II and Margaret Hogan Motherwell. He studied philosophy at Stanford University in California, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937, and continued his studies at Harvard University. These were the heyday of the analytic philosophy of, among others, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, and Motherwell called this one of the reasons that he never worked figuratively in his early work either. His familiarity with logical analysis made him feel like "a fish in water"[1] in abstractions and thinking in abstract structures. Motherwell had his first small solo exhibition when he was in Europe in 1939, at the Raymond Duncan Gallery in Paris. Upon his return to America, he went on to study art history at Columbia University with Meyer Shapiro, who advised him to pursue his scientific career.
