Royal Copenhagen (1775)

Royal Copenhagen

(Copenhagen 1775)

In 1775, the first Danish porcelain factory was established. There they experimented with high-quality products, which caused major money problems. For that reason, King Frederick V decided to invest his money in the company, so that Denmark might become one of the largest cultural centers in Europe. This investment led to the name change to Den Kongelige Danske Porcelains Fabrik. In addition, all imported porcelain was banned. Around the 1780s and 1790s, the company mainly produced blue Rococo tableware that could be used daily. A popular design was the Flora Danica from 1789. The decorative plants and flowers were based on botanical engravings and copied by hand. At the beginning of the 19th century, all cartridges were simplified to make them easier and cheaper to produce. The economic crisis that hit the country from 1813 ensured that no new products were designed. It was not until 1820 that Empire and Neoclassicism emerged. Meanwhile, Royal Copenhagen had become one of the most important porcelain companies and was privatized in 1868. Philip Schou entered the company in 1882 and wanted to emphasize the artistic aspects of the products more. For that reason, Arnold Krog was hired in 1884 and he soon became Artistic Director. He recruited many important designers. To this day, the company carries out many of its old designs. Many contemporary designs are also put into production. The company has played an important role in defining and promoting Danish identity in applied arts.
