Rudi PILLEN (Moen 1931 - Blankenberge 2014)
Education: From 1949 Pillen attended the St. Lucas Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent.
Africa plays an important role in Rudi Pillen's work; this can be seen in the subjects as well as in the atmosphere and use of colour. This art is strongly connected to his own life: he first visited Africa in 1956 – only six years later he moved to Zaire. It was not until thirteen years later that he returned to exhibit his work in Europe and the United States, where he was received with enthusiasm. He works according to the principle of 'action painting': he starts a painting without a preconceived plan, in order to let his intuition be the guiding principle. The flexibility with which Pillen works gives his art strength and sensitivity.
