Sol LeWITT (Hartford 1928 - New York City 2007)
Education
He studied art at the University of Syracuse and in 1949 made an art tour through Europe to get to know the old masters.
Biography
LeWitt was the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. In 1953 he moved to New York, where he was a night watchman for a while at the Museum of Modern Art. 25 years later he would have a major exhibition of his visual work there. He spent a year as a graphic artist in the office of the architect IM Pei where he learned to work in three dimensions. His first exhibition took place in 1965 at the John Daniels Gallery in New York. Known as a modest artist of great renown, LeWitt let the work speak for itself and shun the media. Since 1965, LeWitt has had hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in the United States and Europe. His work ranges from two-dimensional works such as Wall drawings, of which he has created over 1200, and photographs and hundreds of works on paper to three-dimensional sculptures (or structures, which he preferred to speak of) such as 'towers', 'pyramids' and 'geometric form'. These works vary in size from scale model to monumental.
