Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979)

Sonia DELAUNAY (Gradizsk 1885 - Paris 1979)

Sonia Delaunay was a Ukrainian-French artist who married the Cubist artist Robert Delaunay. Her oeuvre includes paintings, textile designs and set designs. Together with her husband she developed simultanism. This was a color theory based on scientific research, which showed that some colors next to each other appeared to have a different color or that the combination of colors could cause an appearance of movement. This made the couple work with contrasting and dissonant colors. Delaunay made extensive use of bright colors in her work. Russian folk art inspired her to work with colours, but the colors of simultanism were innovative. She obtained these bright colors through the reflection of a prism or street lighting. These pure and shaped colors have an innovative effect, but above all an emotional power. In her life, she has experimented with many styles, including Orphism, Cubism, and abstract art. She also painted with her husband until his death. In 1931 she joined the Abstraction-Création group and increasingly turned away from Cubism.
