Stefan Tessely (born in Deinze on 29-06-1933) belongs to the later generation of Latem painters, even though he has spent a large part of his life elsewhere. He is above all a painter, draftsman and pastellist of rural life along the Leie. His works are expressively constructed and with powerful, sombre tonalities of deep brown, blue and green, pulpy thick, he obtains the typical Latem cachet. Forced by an inner urge, he records what moves him inside. Painting is for him a liberation, an outlet. In his works the main tone is joy or melancholy, fear or unrest. Tessely does not want to be forced into a straitjacket of some “ism” or tenor. He is who he is. He does not like endless theoretical and learned conversations about art. The landscapes he paints do not exist in reality. Tessely lets us enjoy the beauty of landscapes and scenes from his youth. They are images that he has absorbed, processed, processed and finally painted. In addition to these visionary visual dream landscapes and rural scenes, he also paints nudes. Emotions also come alive when he paints a sad or happy clown. He can express both joy and sadness in such works. Tessely even spent a few years in a circus to get to know the hard circus life of the clowns, among others. Other themes are musicians, dance, folklore, etc. The fact that Tessely knows the horse through and through is apparent from a series of works depicting, among others, a Brabander (Belgian draft horse) and a thoroughbred Arab. Tessely also made a number of abstract works. The number of still lifes he made can be counted on a few fingers. This theme is not for him. Stefan Tessely graduated in 1959 at the VUB as Burg. Architectural Engineer. He left for Canada (Toronto) and continued his studies at the Summer School of Fine Arts in Muscoca (Canada). He worked in the studios of Broadcasting Corporation and in the meantime did numerous exhibitions in Canada and the USA. At the end of 1965 he returned to Belgium for exhibitions in his own native region along the Leie. From 1975 he lived and worked for two years in Mexico City and Santa Ana in California (USA). In 1982 he lived and worked in Eilat (Israel). He currently resides partly in Switzerland, USA, Israel and Belgium.
