Theo Schuurman (1938-1999)

Theo SCHUURMAN (Enschede 1938 - Amsterdam 1999)

Exploring your own basic ideas, of what often preoccupies you, that's the first start. Thinking about structure, dynamics, the experience of being constantly in motion. Growth processes, light, space and the experience of perception: these are a few characteristic terms when I say something about the content of the work. The work arises intuitively from these basic thoughts and experiences. By doing I order, by doing the work reveals itself.'

Theo Schuurman, born in Enschede in 1938, lived and worked in Amsterdam from 1957 until his death in 1999. He was educated from 1957 to 1963 at the Institute for Applied Arts Education (today's Rietveld Academy) in Amsterdam.

Theo Schuurman received the Royal Prize for Free Painting in 1966. Schuurman's work can be found in various private and corporate collections and museums, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam.
