Walter Gropius (1883-1969)

Walter Gropius (1883-1969)

Walter Gropius was a designer known for his involvement in Bauhaus. Since the early twentieth century, he developed his career by studying at the Technische Hochschule in both Munich and Berlin. He subsequently worked at the office of Peter Behrens as a designer of buildings and furniture. Gropius was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and founded an architectural company with Adolf Meyer. He opposed Hermann Muthesius and sided with Henry van der Velde: design should be personal. After the First World War, however, he saw the need to standardize design. During this period he was director of the Hochschule für angewande Kunst. In 1919 he merged this school with the art academy in Weimar to form the Staatliches Bauhaus. Gropius reintroduced the master-disciple learning system with the aim of uniting different arts. After the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, the school and Gropius themselves took a more rationalistic, industrial path. After his immigration to the United Kingdom in 1934, Gropius worked as an architect and designer at Isokon, among others. In 1937 he left for the United States, where he taught at Harvard University.
