Abraham Hulk Sr. (London, May 1, 1813 ? Zevenaar, March 23, 1897)[was a Dutch painter, draftsman and lithographer. He was trained as a painter at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He received painting lessons from Jean August Daiwaille, portrait painter and second director of the national academy. After his studies he started as a portrait painter and initially settled in London. In 1833 he decided to try his luck in America and booked a trip on a ketch to Boston. Here he became enchanted by the beautiful natural beauty in the area with forests and islands that he also painted. From Boston he traveled on to New York and Albany in the hope of more assignments. When this didn't really work there either, he returned to Boston where he hired himself out as a ship painter for a dollar a day. Finally, he returned to Manchester and from there returned to the Netherlands. Hulk continued to live in the Netherlands until 1870, where he specialized in painting landscapes and seascapes. His painting style is romantic and related to that of JC Schotel and Louis Meijer. In his paintings he gave an atmospheric image of ships at sea in various weather conditions. He had a preference for seascapes in calm weather and at dawn or in moonlight or twilight. He worked in Amsterdam, Enkhuizen, Haarlem, Nijkerk and Oosterbeek, among others. In Enkhuizen he also painted seascapes from the land perspective with fishermen performing their work on the side of their ships. In Oosterbeek he met Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Hulk's work has been exhibited in several places in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen, Rotterdam and Utrecht. In 1861 he was made an honorary member of the Academy of Saint Petersburg. In 1870 he decided to return to his native England. He died in 1897 in Zevenaar at the age of 83.Source ; rkd , shone , wikipedia
