In 1873 the Finnish factory Arabia was founded by Röstrand and in 1874 the production of pottery and tableware was started. In 1882 the first pattern decorated service was designed with the name Helsingfors . In 1885 the company name Arabia Aktiefabrik was introduced and in 1893 Gustav Herlitz van Rörstrand became director. Around 1900, Arabia's oeuvre increasingly took shape with tiled stoves, vases and tableware, and more patriotic themes were also incorporated into the designs. The First World War led to the sale of Rörstrand's capital, yet Arabia was able to grow thanks to the independence from Finland. After the war, Arabia was sold to the German Arnhold Group due to competition from international imports. Finally, Arabia returned to Finnish ownership from 1927.
In 1932 Kurt Ekholm became the artistic director of Arabia and set up a special art department. Arabia became a pioneer of rational production processes. Despite the war, the company grew, even though there were financial setbacks. Therefore, Wärtsilä offered financial support and Arabia eventually became their property. In the fifties, sixties and seventies firing techniques were modernized, screen printing was also applied to decorate objects, automated molding techniques for mugs were introduced and two new blast furnaces were added. In 1990 Arabia became the property of the Hackman Group. The Moomin collection based on Tove Jansson's books was also launched during this period.
