Astrid Engels studied Italian in Utrecht. As an artist she is self-taught.
She lives and works in Huizen.
Astrid Engels is one of the best-known Dutch visual artists. Engels is a self-taught artist as a visual artist. In the period from 1984 to 1999 she exhibited at home and abroad. On 17 May 2009, Astrid Engels was awarded a Knighthood in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
Astrid Engels has a great fascination for and knowledge of ancient peoples and cultures, and this is clearly reflected in her work. During all the distant journeys she makes, she is inspired by rituals, objects, religions and legends from other continents. Her paintings and lithographs have a magical spiritual charge that in turn inspire others. With her work, Engels builds a wonderful bridge between past and present, between reality and fantasy.
Since 2000 Astrid Engels only shows her latest work via her website and she has opened her own studio in Huizen for viewings and/or assignments.
