After graduating from the Kortrijk Academy, Jan Baptiste DE JONGHE went to Antwerp for two years, where he was apprenticed to the renowned animal and landscape painter Balthasar Ommeganck. Afterwards, he returned to his native city and devoted himself to landscape painting. His father, a wealthy businessman and mayor of Kortrijk from 1805 to 1817, initially did not agree. In his earliest works, De Jonghe interpreted nature in an idyllic, sentimental way. His paintings were romantically composed landscapes, such as the Bosrand near Brussels. Later he tried to depict his subjects more realistically and broke with the traditions of the conventional landscape. In 1840 ? at the height of his fame? King Leopold I ordered six landscape paintings from him. The enormous significance of De Jonghe also lies in the fact that as a teacher at the Kortrijk Academy between 1826 and 1841 he trained a new generation of painters, including Jean-Baptiste Daveloose and Louis-Pierre Verwee.
