Jan Wingen was born in Cologne in 1874. His full name is Johann Laurens Hubert Gottfried Wingen. At the age of fourteen he moved with his parents to Maastricht. He became a decorative painter and painted various interiors, of which not much has survived. In addition, he painted exterior walls with advertising paintings with a self-made proc_d_. In his scarce free time, Jan Wingen went out to make sketches of the environment. In 1935 Jan Wingen moved to The Hague, where he developed his sketches from Limburg into paintings. He also painted the surroundings of The Hague in a true-to-life rendering, mainly landscapes, the sea, the dunes and clouds. Jan Wingen often became the ?grey painter? because he was color blind. Whatever color he saw, he called it gray. For example, he couldn't tell the difference between green and blue. It is therefore unbelievable that he was still excellently able to apply different shades of color to his canvases. When he was inspired to paint, he first made a rough sketch, then worked on the paint with a palette knife. He couldn't make any more changes with his technique. It was only during the last years of his life that he also worked with brushes.
