Johannes Jacobus Maria 'Jan' Bogaerts (1878-1962)

JJM (Jan) BOGAERTS (Den Bosch 1878 - Wassenaar 1962) After his education at the academies in Den Bosch and Antwerp, Jan Bogaerts initially painted dreamy figure paintings and fairytale parks and gardens in the atmosphere of Symbolism. The influence of his Bossche teacher Antoon van Welie can be detected in this. From 1915 he mainly made still lifes, both of flowers and objects. These are depicted more realistically than the landscapes, but just as subdued and tranquil. For his compositions he used everyday attributes as well as antique objects, such as carafes, bottles, dishes, painted boxes and jewels, which he set against a sober background. His flower still lifes stand out because of their original composition and beautiful colours. Museums: including Gemeentemuseum in Arnhem, Teylers Museum in Haarlem and Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch
