Pieter van der Veen on “Geographical Spots”
The reason for the 'Geographical Spots' series of screen prints was the invitation from Akzo Nobel to make a series of prints based on the pattern of the 'Enkamat'. The enkamat is a mat that is used, among other things, to prevent erosion and landslides when reinforcing dikes. The mat is manufactured in a structured, lawful manner: like syrup, liquid threads fall through a regularly perforated plate onto a ribbed surface. The loose wires fall over each other in an unpredictable way. In my design I took the field of application of the Enkamat, the landscape, as a starting point. The prints, made up of three levels, can be regarded as fictitious maps in which each print represents a different scale. The first layer, which forms the background, is formed by randomly flowing ink. Then I split the structure of the Enkamat in two and laid it over the surface as a graphic drawing (the second layer), so that it brings order, as it were. Like the contour lines on a map do. The third layer consists of numbers. They represent the mental plane and symbolize what is going on in our heads. The figures more or less determine the direction of view in the print and the path we can take in the landscape, as it were. The screen print offered here (edition 1 of 1, a unique one) was made in 1997 as part of the 'Geographical Spots' series for Akzo Nobel. It was purchased in 1998 for the well-known art collection of Randstad.
