Theo van Wijngaarden (1874-1952)

As a restorer he specialized in buying old fulfilled paintings. After a thorough cleaning, he sold the paintings, sometimes with a well-known signature. Around 1900, Van Wijngaarden already had contact with the unscrupulous art dealer Leo Nardus and with dealers in London and Berlin. What he really lacked was top quality, and that problem was solved when he met Han van Meegeren. Van Meegeren paintings found their way to American collectors through Joseph Duveen, a British old masters dealer who also had a large office in New York. The Laughing Girl and the Lace-maker were sold by Van Wijngaarden to Duveen, who resold them to Andrew Mellon, a Pittsburgh banker and well-known American art collector. Both paintings were probably made by Van Meegeren[2]. The Laughing Girl now hangs in the National Gallery in Washington. The painting was donated to the museum by Mellon. For years it was thought that this was a Vermeer, since 1995 it has been attributed to Van Wijngaarden[3]. However, the text accompanying the painting has not been changed.
