Artist
Wil van Iersel (1965, Udenhout) graduated in 1991 from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. At this academy he worked for some time as a teacher of “Documentary Photography”. He received the “Incentive Award for Photography” from the city of Amsterdam. His work has been shown in exhibitions in the Amsterdam Historical Museum, the Spaarnestad photo archive, the Nederlands Fotomuseum and De Melkweg/IDFA. Photos by Wil van Iersel are in the collection of the Amsterdam Municipal Archive and in the Randstad Photo Collection. Photos of him have been published in newspapers in the Netherlands (including NRC Handelsblad) and Germany (including NZZ am Sonntag). Wil van Iersel lives in Amsterdam and works in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. His work is characterized by the longer time he takes for his projects, in which he focuses on everyday situations. Through his photos he asks questions without judgement. His photographs are “an expression of the absurdity and tragedy of human existence”.
